Description for B&B:

Maison Rives, a historic establishment dating back to before the French Revolution, boasts a captivating past that rivals the charm of Montolieu itself. Each room within the house is adorned with furnishings that beautifully complement the abundance of natural light streaming through the windows. Whether your view overlooks the scenic bridge and Alzeau Gorge or the quaint village street, our spacious rooms are filled with an airy and light atmosphere, complete with en-suite facilities.

Start your day off right by enjoying a delicious breakfast in the salon, where our friendly staff can assist you in planning your day or providing directions if needed. Additionally, we offer dinner options and organize various thematic courses, including innovative cooking classes featuring locally sourced, organic ingredients, photography walks and workshops, and calligraphy training.

Families with children are more than welcome at Maison Rives, although we regretfully do not allow pets. Conveniently, two car parks are easily accessible, with one located just 150 meters away and another 200 meters away.

Perched atop a rocky ridge between the Alzeau and Dure Rivers, Montolieu, originally known as Montis Olivis or Mount of Olives, warmly welcomes its numerous admirers. Surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, forests, rolling fields, pristine rivers, and lakes, this picturesque village in the Aude region of France boasts a rich historical background that perfectly matches its natural beauty. Among its esteemed ancestors are Charlemagne and Colbert. Charlemagne founded the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD, while Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, established a Royal Manufactory that exported high-quality woollen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village. The early inhabitants, aside from nuns and monks, earned their livelihood by cultivating the fertile vineyards and olive groves. They also harnessed the power of the river torrents to operate water mills, which fueled thriving textile and paper factories. However, as times changed, the village's success dwindled over fifty years ago, resulting in a decline in population from over 3,000 to approximately 900.

Fortunately, a lover of literature stepped in to revive Montolieu as a renowned book village - a village du livre. Today, the village attracts countless visitors each year, even those who are not avid readers. Non-bibliophiles also appreciate the village's allure and take pleasure in exploring the numerous outdoor activities offered amidst Montolieu's natural and historical abundance.
